I am dedicating my life to protect wildlife and environment!

Ten things i learned from Shark MOOC.

20/9/2016

I completed the course Sharks! Global Diversity, Biology and Conservation with Cornell University and the University of Queensland on the EdX platform on the end of July and it was really interesting course. Before i started the course i thought i knew some things, but when i finished the course i understood that the knowledge that i had about sharks it was almost nothing it was below 2%.

I really enjoyed to learn all this fascinating things about the sharks.

So here are the ten things that i learned:
  1. They are not bony fish, they are Chondrichtyans which means they have skeletons made of cartilage.
  2. The most type of sharks can stop swimming and survive, but here we exclude great white shark and some other sharks, which if they stop to swim they die.
  3. They breath water. And their gills are filters.
  4. Rays are basically flat sharks with pectoral fins.
  5. Sharks teeth have similar anatomy to human teeth.
  6. A shark’s buoyancy is regulated by the high oil content of their livers.
  7. Olfaction (smell) and hearing are sharks the best of their distance senses.
  8. Sharks have two extra senses that we don’t have: mechanosense and electrosense. Mechanosense is their ability to feel your movements. Electrosense is their ability to sense the electric field caused by the muscle contractions of their prey.
  9. Sharks have a different shape lens in their eyes to humans so they can see clearly under water.
  10. Their behavior is stunning and they are not the "monsters" of the sea.

Their biology is so wonderful that you can never find the correct words to describe it.

One thing is sure. That i suggest to everybody to join this course (when it will open again) and to learn about these fascinating animals.

Those who don't like what i am writing and they think it's offensive to their groups, they can leave and never return.
