Some things to do in the field is not enough to be able to not panic or afraid, but you need to know to follow protocols and have some skills.
Entering a sea cave when there are seal pups is dangerous mostly for the seal pup because the mother can abandon it and then the seal pup it will be orphan (with what that means: to die, or grow as not wild animal but to need humans to feed it, etc.) and for you because even the mother can be aggressive and attack you when you enter the sea cave.
Following the protocols:
Working as field marine biologist sometimes is dangerous.
Because to see a marine animal from close (so you can see as best you can the morphological characteristics) sometimes you can be bitten or stinged.
And that's extreme dangerous because some animals have poison and other have some toxins which by each one person have different healthy problems can be fatal. Also sometimes to record observations you need to work on severe weather. To dive when raining or snowing, or the sea has strong currents or big waves.
What I am doing Freediving with jellyfish?
I am participating in a citizen science project about recording jellyfish in Greece. Every time when I freedive I am looking if there is a jellyfish nearby.
I am taking as many photos I can and then I upload them to iNaturalist (that's because my observations can be useful in more than one project).
And last but not least I am taking videos of touching the jellyfish to educate people that are not monsters but creatures that if you know what to do and how to react if you see a jellyfish to not destroy your vacations and to avoid sometimes to not let people go and take them out of the water and let them die.
Swimming and freediving with some kind of jellyfish can be dangerous.
Please don't touch them. Especially if you don't have basic knowledge of them and the skills to do what it must be done to avoid injury of the jellyfish or yourself.
I am creating a new small video-series about working on the field as marine biologist and conservationist showing what work i do.
A new online school with courses for those who work on biology, oceanography, zoology, citizen science field and aims to improve the skills they need to work on the field.
My Wildlife School aims to impart the knowledge of people who are working on the field, so the young people (and not only) learn the skills they need and haven’t learned them on their colleges and universities to be able to work on the field.
To work on the field you don’t need just knowledge but also skills. It’s hardworking, very competitive and it’s lifetime adventure and loyalty. You don’t have the right to make wrong decisions working on the field because it might cost you money or even the life of yourself or your colleagues.
So you need to be prepared.
The knowledge doesn’t come always free, but it doesn’t need either to be expensive. It needs to be affordable for everyone and that’s our main target.
